如果說要選出影響我這一生最大的片子之一，那麼1998年的Elizabeth絕對佔了一席之地。
晚上忙完後睡不著，又將這部片子重新拿出來看，關於Elizabeth I的故事許多人耳熟能詳。
今天sisi想特別介紹Elizabeth一生中最重要的男人 - Sir Robert Dudley
Elizabeth: Just tell me why.
Lord Robert: Why? Madam, is it not plain enough to you?

Kenilworth Castle是一段愛情的見證，主角分別是Earl of Leicester，Robert Lord Dudley
與女王Elizabeth I。400年來，兩人的關係一直為英國人所津津樂道，Walter Scott描寫關於
兩人愛情的小說更激起人們對 Kenilworth Castle的聯想， 雖然城堡已於1644年毀於內戰中。
從草坡緩步而上，即可見Kenilworth Castle的廢墟。Leicester's Building典雅浩瀚，
The Great Hall則高闊一如教堂，萬籟俱寂，雖止剩雕欄，但頎長秀麗，亦足見其盛時規模。
曾聽說Kenilworth是全英最美的廢墟，只是站在塔樓上回望，如蓋巨樹下石牆廢頹，
畢竟掩不住舊時王謝的寂寞和滄桑。雕欄玉砌應猶在...只是朱顏改。
1554年，Elizabeth被姐姐Mary I以參與新教徒暴亂之名投入London Tower，
與因Lady Jane Grey（英國史上在位最短的女王）被羈押在此的Robert Dudley相識，
（Robert是Lady Jane Grey的小叔）。 1558年，瑪麗一世病死，Elizabeth繼位，
London Tower裡患難與共的經歷， 使Robert Dudley成為女王最親密的朋友，
不僅朝政賴為柱石，感情上也極為眷顧。 1563年，Elizabeth I將Kenilworth Castle賜與他
做為別業，並在次年加封1st Earl of Leicester及Baron of Denbigh頭銜。 1572年和1575年，
女王先後兩次蒞臨Kenilworth Castle。 女王即位時年僅25歲， 來Kenilworth時也正是盛年。
3年內兩次光顧，可想而知她與 Robert Dudley的關係。
當然，未婚君主婚姻的政治價值遠高於感情上的考量也是相當重要的因素。
1566年，下議院就曾通過法案，以質詢的方式要求女王 交代自己對婚姻的想法及打算。
Elizabeth當時的回答是：「我只可能有一個丈夫，那就是英格蘭。」
這句話是英國著名的「語錄」之一，聽上去非常冠冕堂皇，但多少近乎激憤之辭。
Elizabeth I固然以「童貞女王」（Virgin Queen）名世，卻並不表示她對男女之事
不曾有過嚮往。當時身染天花被認為即將不久於人世之際， 她就曾在病榻上表達
過對婚姻的憧憬，而所傾吐的對象就是Robert Dudley。
Robert Dudley是the Duke of Northumberland，John Dudley最小的兒子，
其人在英國歷史上的口碑並不甚佳，幾乎所有的文獻和傳記稱之其為
「the favorite of Queen Elizabeth I」， 就一個樞密院成員而言，這顯然不是
體面的尊稱。只是，每個人都有脆弱的一面，即便是 Elizabeth，也難免兒女情長，
更何況患難中產生的感情總是比較經得起歲月的消磨。
雖沒能結成秦晉之好， 但男女之間異乎尋常的友誼卻一直貫穿他們entire life。
在一封寫於1588年7月20日的信中，Robert Dudley稱呼Elizabeth為「最最甜蜜的女王陛下」
和「我最最親愛的女士」。代表「最」的「most」中的「o」雙寫，中間空一格，
成為「mo ost」，兩個o上還畫有「眉毛」，形同一雙「眼睛」，據傳「眼睛」
是Elizabeth對Robert Dudley的暱稱。 這封信寫成一個多月後，56歲的Robert Dudley
即告辭世，女王為此幾乎崩潰， 曾把自己鎖在房中數日之久。
15年後，1603年，這位最偉大的英國女王亦去世， 在她床頭放著Robert Dudley
寫給她的另一封信，信封上有女王手跡：「His Last letter」.......。

I mo ost humbly beseech your Majesty to pardon your poor old servant to be thus bold in
sending to know how my gracious lady doth, and what ease of her late pain she finds,
being the chiefest thing in the world I do pray for, for her to have good health and long life.
For my own poor case, I continue still your medicine and find that [it] amends much better
than any other thing that hath been given me. Thus hoping to find perfect cure at the bath,
with the continuance of my wonted prayer for your Majesty's mo ost happy preservation,
I humbly kiss your foot. From your old lodging at Rycote, this Thursday morning,
ready to take on my Journey, by Your Majesty's mo ost faithful and obedient servant.
